46 miners and six rescuers died in a coal mine

The regional Investigation Committee said that three people, including the Listvyazhnaya mine manager and his deputy, had been detained on suspicion of violating industrial safety regulations.

According to the reports, miners suffocated when a ventilation shaft filled with gas. State television said prosecutors believed a methane explosion had occurred.

Among the dead are 46 miners and six rescuers.

Dozens of people were treated at the hospital, some of them with smoke poisoning. Four were in critical condition.

The Kemerovo coal region, located about 3,500 kilometers east of Moscow, has suffered from deadly mining accidents for years.

Video footage showed rescue teams and ambulances at the mine, with police officers outside in the snow.

Some 285 people were inside the mine when smoke spread through the ventilation shaft, according to the Russian Emergency Ministry. At least 239 made it to the surface, according to authorities.

In 2007, the region was the scene of the worst mining accident since the collapse of the Soviet Union, when an explosion at the Ulyanovskaya mine claimed the lives of more than 100 people. In 2010, explosions at the Raspadskaya mine in the region killed more than 90 people.
