he got the support of the whole right

These four groups make up the Chile Podemos Más coalition, which supports the current president, Sebastián Piñera, and whose candidate in the first round, the moderate Sebastián Sichel, was far from reaching the ballot last Sunday, obtaining 12.7% of the votes. preferences.

The president of RN, Francisco Chahuán, explained the party position. “We had a candidate who could not pass the fence, but we are risking the future of Chile. If the irresponsible left wins, we will have the country downhill, “he said shortly before the general council ratified its support for the extreme right.

The first to express their support, “without demands or conditions”, were the senior commanders of the UDI, the most conservative party in the group, in whose ranks various officials of the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990) and from whom are active. Kast was a historic member and MP for 16 years.

Record

The ultra-conservative Kast, who in the first round last Sunday was the most voted candidate with 27.9%, left the UDI to found his own formation, the Republican Party, in 2019.

In December he will fight in the second round against the leftist deputy Gabriel Boric, who achieved 25.8%, leader of the Approve Dignity coalition, made up of the Broad Front (FA), a progressive group with less than 5 years of history, the Communist Party and various organizations and social movements, such as the Mesa de Unidad Social.

From Evópoli, the most centrist formation of the outgoing ruling party, they affirmed that they will support the Kast candidacy to “vote against” the left coalition and discarded their participation in a possible Kast government.

For his part, Rodrigo Carimori, leader of the PRI, affirmed that his party will not become a “passive accomplice of what happens in the country” if Boric wins.

Renewal

This is the first time since the end of the dictatorship (1973-1990) that the two candidates for the ballot are not part of the two large traditional coalitions, Chile Podemos Más (center-right) and Nuevo Pacto Social (center-left).

The candidates promote two radically opposite country models: on the one hand, Boric has a program that points towards a social democratic model and a welfare state similar to the European one, with a feminist and environmentalist accent, while Kast defends the neoliberal model installed during the dictatorship and a harsh anti-immigration speech.

From Sunday night, when the results were known that left them 2.1 points apart, both candidates came out to dispute the political center. The optional nature of the vote and the 52% abstention in the first round prevent making forecasts, automatically projecting the support of the eliminated candidates, to the right and left, in favor of Kast and Boric.

Left

For now, Boric has added the support of large center-left groups such as the Socialist Party (PS), the Party for Democracy (PPD), the Progressive Party (PRO) and also the support of former president Ricardo Lagos (2000-2006) and some important leaders of the Christian Democracy (DC), a traditional group that for now was not monolithic in that endorsement.

A survey carried out by the consulting firm Cadem registers that for the ballot both candidates are tied with 39% of the intention to vote.

The poll was conducted between November 19 and 21 and the question posed to the participants was: “If the second presidential round were this Sunday, who would you vote for?”

There were 22% of respondents who said they would not vote, do not know who they would vote for, or chose not to respond.
