16,749 new infections in Austria

On Saturday, the Ministry of Health and the Interior reported 16,749 new cases and ten deaths within 24 hours. In a weekly comparison, the increase is particularly clear: According to the authorities, there were 7,405 new infections last Saturday, which is less than half of today’s value. The number of Covid patients in the hospitals has fallen slightly in the past 24 hours.

There are currently 890 infected people in the hospitals, 13 fewer than yesterday and 30 fewer than a week ago. 214 Covid patients currently need treatment in Austria’s intensive care units. That’s 14 fewer than on Friday and 57 fewer than a week ago.

The Austria-wide seven-day incidence has risen to 1,108.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (after 1,004.1 on Friday). The federal state with the highest seven-day incidence is Salzburg with 1,986.2, followed by Tyrol, Vienna and Vorarlberg (1,664.5, 1,540.6 and 1,055.3, respectively). Then follow Upper Austria (905), Lower Austria (856.5), Styria (674.1), Carinthia (635.8) and Burgenland (488.5). Most new infections in the past 24 hours were documented in the federal capital Vienna (4,782). There were 2,939 cases in Upper Austria, 2,406 in Lower Austria, 1,861 in Tyrol, 1,588 in Salzburg, 1,426 in Styria, 773 in Vorarlberg, 686 in Carinthia and 288 in Burgenland.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, 1,428,170 confirmed cases have been documented in Austria, and 13,915 people have died from or as a result of the virus infection. 126,064 people are currently actively suffering from the disease.

A total of 730,458 rapid PCR and antigen tests were reported in the past 24 hours, including 572,306 of the more meaningful PCR tests. However, in the past few days, the PCR test system outside of Vienna has caused problems and delays in large parts of Austria due to overload. The positive rate of the PCR tests was 2.9 percent. This 24-hour value is above the average for the past week with a positive rate of 2.2 percent.

62,446 vaccinations were carried out on Friday. There were 6,324 first bites, 12,305 second bites and 43,817 third bites – the number of third vaccinations is above the seven-day average of 31,925. A total of 223,473 boosters were administered within the past seven days. In Austria, 6,390,474 people (71.5 percent of Austrians) currently have valid vaccination protection.

The protection rate (valid vaccination certificate) is highest in Burgenland at 77.1 percent. In Lower Austria 73.4 percent of the population have a valid vaccination protection, in Styria 71.6 percent. After Vienna (70.4), Tyrol (70.3), Salzburg (68.5), Vorarlberg (68.3) and Carinthia (68.3), Upper Austria brings up the rear with 67.4 percent.
