Rescuers clear the river Kalaus near Svetlograd in the Stavropol Territory from the resulting blockage in the riverbed of bottles and garbage. This was reported in the regional Ministry of Emergency Situations on Saturday, January 15.
Clearing is carried out so that spring floods pass safely. 54 people and 15 pieces of equipment are involved in the elimination. Wood and compressed debris will be removed with a crane.
“At the moment, the working group has discovered a jam-prone area, part of the river is blocked by fallen trees and plastic garbage,” said Andrey Peskovoy, deputy head of the department for protecting the population and territory from the regional emergency situation.
The cause of the blockage could be a fallen tree that blocked the riverbed. The blockage is expected to be cleared soon.
“It’s very difficult, because the garbage is compressed, mostly plastic, but glass also comes across. Everything has turned into a dense mass, which is located above the water, so it’s hard to remove it, but now we’ll start, and then it will go on,” said the Deputy Head of Administration Petrovsky urban district of the Stavropol Territory Alexander Babykin.
Rescuers say there is no risk of flooding for nearby settlements.
“Monitoring is now organized on all riverbeds of the Stavropol Territory. Where such a situation arises, the services immediately notify, the authorities arrive, and the clearing begins, ”Peskovoy said.
On December 15, Russian President Vladimir Putin raised the issue of the timing of the elimination of landfills within city boundaries. At the same time, the head of state expressed surprise that there are still no project documentation for 104 landfills that need to be eliminated.
On October 5, Vladimir Putin demanded that all open landfills within city limits be removed in the coming years. He also pointed out the need to accelerate this process.
