NRW Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst defends carnival in Cologne

The start of the carnival on 11.11. in Cologne seemed strange against the background of the high incidence figures. Now NRW Prime Minister Wüst has defended the starting shot of the fifth season.

They were pictures like from the time before the corona pandemic: Last Thursday, thousands of jesters and fools celebrated the beginning of the carnival season in Cologne. Despite the 2G rule, many observers criticized the celebrations. NRW Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst sees it differently.

Carnival is a dress rehearsal for Christmas markets: Superspreader event or safe with 2G?

“In North Rhine-Westphalia an above-average number of people are vaccinated. With this important progress you cannot simply continue to forbid everything to those who protect themselves, their loved ones and society with their vaccinations,” he told the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger”. One must also keep an eye on whether state bans are accepted by the population. “That is why the decision in Cologne to let the carnival start under 2G conditions was correct,” said Wüst, who is currently also chairman of the Prime Minister’s Conference.

No confirmation yet for the street carnival in the coming year

After the carnival kicked off on Thursday, it was mainly pictures and videos from Cologne of the crowds that led to critical comments. At the official events, 2G also applied outdoors – so all visitors had to be vaccinated or recovered.

Looking at the street carnival at the beginning of next year, Wüst said: “Nobody knows what the pandemic situation will look like next spring. I would like the carnival to take place. But for that to happen, we absolutely have to stop the dynamic in the number of infections.”

Wüst rejects the 2G plus model

In order to achieve this, Wüst rejects the so-called 2G plus tightening. One should not impose the next duty first on the vaccinated, “who have done everything for health protection,” said Wüst.

With the 2G plus principle, vaccinated and convalescent people only get access if they can also show a current negative corona test.

It is more important to look at the non-vaccinated. “We have to advertise that more people get vaccinated,” said Wüst, who is currently also chairman of the prime ministerial conference. The managing health minister Jens Spahn (CDU) had recently spoken out in favor of introducing the 2G plus principle for public events.

At the federal-state meeting on Thursday, Wüst wants to insist on the introduction of a nationwide uniform 2G rule. That would mean that unvaccinated people would no longer have access to certain events. “We need comparable measures in the countries to break the fourth wave,” he said.
