Working tirelessly: This is how we say thank you to our nursing staff

The OÖNachrichten will start on December 1st with a “Tombola of Appreciation”. Upper Austria’s economy and culture support this initiative by providing a large number of valuable prizes, which are intended to be a thank you for the more than 14,000 nursing staff at the Upper Austrian hospitals. Only they can take part in this raffle. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, we want to put togetherness in the foreground, stimulate thought and focus on the essentials: empathy. And we want to give your work what it deserves beyond all measure: Appreciation.

14,218 nurses work in the hospitals in Upper Austria: in the hospitals of the Upper Austrian Health Holding, in the facilities of the Kepler Clinic and in the Upper Austrian religious hospitals.

85 percent are women

Care is female: 85 percent are women. You have to go to and over your performance limit every day, without any perspective of how long this situation will last. 9450 Covid patients have now been successfully treated and discharged as recovered. 1682 people unfortunately died. The deaths are of course an enormous psychological burden for the staff. Nevertheless, morale is still high.

Jutta Oberweger, spokeswoman for the health holding company, says there have been “hardly” any layoffs since the beginning of the pandemic. Adding the “heads” together, there are currently even more caregivers than at the beginning of the pandemic in February 2020. However, the plus can mainly be explained by an increase in part-time employment, says Andrea Fürtauer-Mann, spokeswoman for the religious clinics.

Taking vacation is difficult

In addition to the daily stress, there is the fact that neither sufficient vacation nor overtime can be reduced. This is already proven by the figures from the previous year: from 2019 to 2020, time and vacation credits increased by 17.4 percent, according to Oberweger. “We tried to cut vacations in the summer when the numbers were low,” says Fürtauer-Mann. Holidays around Christmas “cannot take place as planned”.

From December 1st: The “Tombola of Appreciation”

We are still in the middle of the preparations for this extensive project. On Wednesday, December 1st, the initiative that we have christened “Tombola of Appreciation” starts. There are many prizes to be won.

Shopping vouchers and cultural highlights

When we asked potential partners this week whether they would support the initiative in favor of the nurses, we mostly didn’t even have to finish the first sentence. “We’re in!” No hesitation, no time to think about it. We have already collected hundreds of prizes in just a few days – and we are convinced that many more will follow. The spectrum ranges from shopping vouchers from XXX Lutz, from Fussl Modestrasse, from Bellaflora and Vossen to cinema tickets for the Megaplex Pasching and Linzer Moviemento to cultural highlights that can (hopefully) be enjoyed again without restrictions in the coming year. For the summer concert at Burg Clam, we were given 3 x 2 VIP tickets for a concert of our choice worth 350 euros each. And the support doesn’t know any federal state borders. The Vienna Albertina sent us ten annual tickets, the Vienna Burgtheater looks forward to the attendance of the nurses as does the Linz State Theater. And that is just the beginning. We stay tuned.

So it goes on

The “Tombola of Appreciation” begins on December 1st. From this day we invite you, dear nurses, to participate. Participation is very easy. Register for the raffle on the internet at nachrichten.at/danke by December 12th, and a random generator will decide on the winners on December 15th. In the following days we will notify you in writing whether and what you have won. We ask for your understanding that it is not possible to register for a certain price. The vouchers are of course transferable. So if you win and still need a Christmas present … prizes cannot be redeemed in cash.

Do you want to support?

In the next two weeks we will present you daily prizes that will be raffled off at the raffle. If you or your company also want to donate something to this raffle: You can reach us at [email protected], we will then contact you. We look forward to any support for this initiative.
