Diplomatic escalation between Serbia and Australia over the Djokovic-gate

“Why are they mistreating him, why are they attacking him, not only him but also his family and the entire nation?”Vucic wrote on social media.

The Serbian president’s message came a few hours after Australia again canceled the world tennis number one visa, which leaves him at risk of returning to a holding center on Saturday, where he has already spent several days after landing in Melbourne airport without being vaccinated against Covid-19.

Djokovic wants to be able to defend his title at the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season, which starts on Monday.

“If they want to ban Novak Djokovic from winning a 10th trophy in Melbourne, why not expel him immediately? Why didn’t they tell him that it was impossible to get a visa for your country?” Vukic asked.

“Novak, we are with you!”, concluded the Serbian president.

Vukic had already shown his support for the tennis player at the start of this case, calling Djokovic’s earlier retention a “political witch hunt”.

“Nole” saw his entry visa to Australia canceled for the first time on January 5, after which he was left in a holding center.

His lawyers appealed and managed to get a judge to order his release on January 10. But the Australian Immigration Minister decided to cancel his visa again, for “health and public order” reasons.

Djokovic has admitted to incorrectly filling out his Australian entry declaration and failing to respect isolation rules in Serbia after testing positive for Covid-19 in December. The tennis player hoped that last month’s infection would allow him to have a vaccination exemption to be able to play in the Melbourne tournament.
