The hearing of tennis world number one Novak Djokovic before the federal court in Australia is scheduled to take place on Sunday in front of three judges. As the Australian news agency AAP wrote on Saturday, the case of the 34-year-old Serb will be heard at the Federal Court of Australia from 9.30 a.m. by presiding judge James Allsop and his colleagues Anthony Besanko and David O’Callaghan.
The federal court should clarify whether Djokovic can take part in the Australian Open, which begins on Monday, or whether he has to leave the country. According to the report, after a decision by three judges, no appeals can be made against the verdict.
Novak Djokovic brought back to the deportation hotel
The visa case continued on Saturday with a brief procedural hearing before Judge O’Callaghan. After the authorities had refused entry to Djokovic, who was not vaccinated against Corona, last week, he had spent several nights at the Park Hotel in Melbourne’s Carlton district. The first court decision on Monday was in his favour, Djokovic then continued preparing for the first Grand Slam tournament of the season.
His visa was invalidated a second time in a personal decision by Immigration Secretary Alex Hawke on Friday. Djokovic was brought back to the deportation hotel on Saturday, Australian media reported. It’s likely he’ll have to stay there overnight until Sunday’s hearing.
The case keeps taking new turns
The Djokovic case had taken new turns in the past few days. He declared incorrect information about his travel activities before the flight to Melbourne to be a “mistake” by his team. The 34-year-old was also criticized because of a meeting with young tennis players in his home country immediately after his positive corona test and because of an interview appointment a day later.
“Der Spiegel” also reported at the beginning of the week that there were doubts that Djokovic had actually tested positive for the corona virus on December 16th. The magazine referred to inconsistencies in the identification number of Djokovic’s corona test. When scanning the QR code of the test on Monday, the result was “negative” and a short time later “positive”.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic intervened again on Friday in the dispute. He accused the Australian authorities of treating Djokovic badly. “Novak, we are by your side!” Assured the head of state in the online service Instagram.
