Jan Fedder: Hamburger Promenade now bears his name

Two years ago, the people of Hamburg had to say goodbye to a well-known personality in their city. This Friday (January 14), the late actor Jan Fedder (1955-2019, “Großstadtrevier”) was honored for his work with a promenade named after him at the Port of Hamburg. His widow Marion Fedder also attended the inauguration of the Jan-Fedder-Promenade between Landungsbrücken and Baumwall. Her husband would have celebrated his 67th birthday on January 14th.

“For me, a big heart’s desire is being fulfilled today, I’m happy and proud,” said Marion Fedder at the ceremony. “You couldn’t have found a better place to honor Jan for eternity. He would say: ‘Fedder can’t do it!'” Hamburg’s Interior Senator Andy Grote (53) added: “Jan Fedder was such a strong Hamburg figure and here connected to the edge of the harbour, his territory. It’s great that we can now officially name it after him.”

Dirk Matthies in “Großstadtrevier”

Jan Fedder died on December 30, 2019 at the age of 64 in his Hamburg apartment. He became famous for his portrayal of policeman Dirk Matthies in the cult series “Großstadtrevier”. The funeral service personally planned by Fedder during his lifetime took place on January 14, 2020, his 65th birthday, in Hamburg’s Michel with great sympathy from the public. Then there was a mourning convoy through the streets of St. Pauli. Two days later, the Hamburg artist was buried in the Ohlsdorf cemetery with close family and friends.

The Jan-Fedder-Promenade is not the only tribute that the Hanseatic city has given to Fedder. In September 2020, a brass plaque was unveiled in front of the main church of St. Michaelis Michel. Next to a likeness of the actor, “Hamburg was your district and Michel was your anchor” can be read.
